Uttar Pradesh state board of high school and intermediate education : Historic Background
Established under the Legislative Council of United Provinces Act in 1921, this board conducted its first examination in 1923. It pioneered the 10+2 system and introduced an intermediate examination after the initial public examination. Prior to 1923, both the high school and 10+2 examinations were solely conducted by Allahabad University.
In the past, high school offered various streams such as Technical Education, Arts, Agriculture, Fine Arts, Science, and Commerce. However, due to demand, the class X curriculum has been streamlined with a common core. In the year 2000, the board revised the high school curriculum, introducing six compulsory subjects including Social Science, Hindi, Mathematics, another language, Science, and one subject for social and physical education. Internal examinations were conducted, and there was no external public examination for class X. Only one optional subject was available.

The Ex-Officio Board Chairman holds the position of the Director of Education at the state level, appointed by the state government. The Board Secretary, along with eight ex-officio members, is also appointed by the government. The board operates through various sub-committees, including the Curriculum Committee, Examination Committee, Result Committee, Recognition Committee, and Finance Committee, collectively covering around 40 subjects.
